Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin — The Coming of the Book: The Impact of Printing 1450–1800 (1958, trans. 1976):

By that date, these presses had produced some twenty-seven thousand editions — perhaps as many as fifteen to twenty million copies. Within fifty years, one man’s invention had changed the material conditions of intellectual life across an entire civilization.”

Numbers like these — twenty-seven thousand editions in fifty years — make the speed of the press’s spread concrete in a way that abstract claims about “information revolution” do not. Angle 4 — Fixing the Vernacular: How Print Standardized Spelling and Made National Languages Thesis: Before print, spelling and grammar in vernacular languages were fluid to the point that the same word could be spelled several different ways within a single manuscript; the printing press, by fixing texts in mass-produced identical copies, was a primary driver of the standardization of national vernacular languages — a linguistic transformation as consequential as print’s better-known religious and scientific effects. Angle 5 — The Piracy Wars: Print Privileges and the Invention of Intellectual Property Enforcement Thesis: Long before modern copyright law, early modern printers and rulers improvised an entire system of exclusive “printing privileges,” guild licensing, and cross-border piracy enforcement to manage the economic chaos of unauthorized reprinting — and this largely forgotten institutional history is the direct ancestor of contemporary intellectual property law. Focus on: The privilege system used by Venice, France, and the Holy Roman Empire to grant individual printers temporary exclusive rights to specific texts; documented cross-border piracy disputes, where a book printed under privilege in one city-state was immediately reprinted without authorization in a neighboring jurisdiction with no enforcement recourse; the Stationers’ Company in England as a guild-based licensing and enforcement mechanism that predates the Statute of Anne by over a century; the economic incentives that made piracy profitable even when caught, given weak and geographically limited enforcement.
