The Read content argued that writing was invented for bureaucratic and economic purposes — not poetry or philosophy — and that its most consequential effects were downstream: making law, science, history, and literature possible across time and distance in ways that oral culture cannot sustain. Three different ways to explore the same territory:


Angle 1 — Writing and the Restructuring of Memory Thesis: The invention of writing did not simply give human beings a new tool for recording thought — it fundamentally restructured what memory is, how knowledge is organized, and what counts as knowing. Plato’s warning in the Phaedrus that writing produces a simulacrum of knowledge rather than real knowledge anticipates modern cognitive science research on externalization and its costs. Focus on: Walter Ong’s analysis of the cognitive differences between oral and literate mentalities; Jack Goody’s research on how writing enables new forms of knowledge organization (lists, tables, recipes) that are impossible in oral culture; the neuroscience of reading (how literacy changes brain structure); the contemporary parallel in digital externalization — GPS navigation and the atrophy of spatial memory, search engines and the atrophy of fact retention Key tension: Every technology that extends cognitive capacity also atrophies a capacity it replaces. Writing externalizes memory; digital technology externalizes writing. At each stage, the question Plato asked in the Phaedrus recurs: is this new capacity accompanied by a real loss, and if so, is the trade worth making? There is no obvious answer, which is why the question keeps recurring across two and a half millennia of technology history.


Angle 2 — The Alphabet’s Radical Simplification and Its Consequences Thesis: The Phoenician invention of the alphabet — reducing the hundreds of signs required by cuneiform and hieroglyphs to twenty-two consonant marks — was one of the most consequential acts of simplification in intellectual history, and the difference it made to who could be literate was at least as important as the difference it made to what could be written. Focus on: The literacy demands of cuneiform (a minimum of five to seven years of scribal training; a professional scribal class with economic and social interests in maintaining complexity); the comparative simplicity of alphabetic literacy (in principle learnable in weeks); the social consequences: in cuneiform cultures, literacy was a restricted professional skill; alphabetic literacy could in principle spread to traders, soldiers, and eventually (very eventually) to women and non-elites; the paradox that the most consequential simplification in writing history was invented by traders, not scribes or rulers Key tension: Simplified writing systems democratize access to literacy, but they also remove barriers that served functions beyond exclusion. Cuneiform scribes had deep knowledge of the Mesopotamian literary and administrative tradition precisely because they spent years acquiring it; alphabetic literacy could be acquired cheaply but didn’t automatically produce that depth. The question of what simplification costs — in depth, in cultural transmission, in the maintenance of complex knowledge — is as relevant to digital literacy today as to the alphabet’s invention three thousand years ago.


Angle 3 — The Undeciphered Scripts: What We Still Cannot Read Thesis: Three major ancient writing systems remain completely undeciphered — the Indus Valley script (c. 2600–1900 BC), Linear A (Minoan, c. 1800–1450 BC), and proto-Elamite (c. 3200–2900 BC, making it potentially the world’s oldest writing) — and their continued illegibility raises profound questions about what we think we know about ancient civilizations and how much of the past is permanently inaccessible. Focus on: The Indus Valley script: the mature Harappan civilization produced hundreds of inscribed seals with a consistent script that appears on thousands of objects across a wide geographic area; the language underlying it is unknown, and no bilingual inscription (like the Rosetta Stone) has been found; proposed decipherments are numerous and none is accepted; the Indus Valley civilization itself remains consequently mysterious in ways that Mesopotamia and Egypt are not. The question of what kind of evidence could in principle allow decipherment — and what would still be missing even if we could read the signs — is a good entry point into the epistemology of ancient history. Key tension: The confidence we have in our knowledge of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt depends almost entirely on the decipherment of their scripts. For the Indus Valley civilization — one of the three or four largest urban civilizations of the ancient world, contemporary with early Mesopotamia and Egypt — we have no texts we can read. This silence is not just a scholarly problem; it is a reminder that most of human history is permanently inaccessible, and that what we call “ancient history” is a tiny, language-lucky sample of a much larger past.
