Angle 4 — The List as Technology: How Writing Invented Data Thesis: The earliest administrative tablets — grain allocations, ration lists, tax tallies — were not a primitive precursor to “real” writing but the direct technological ancestor of every subsequent data structure, from double-entry bookkeeping to the relational database, making the humble bureaucratic list one of the most consequential inventions in intellectual history.
